ICP: More Than Just a Domain Name

DFINITY has officially applied for the .icp domain extension through ICANN, but there’s more to this than a new web address. The bigger story is the potential connection between .icp domains, ICP-hosted websites, and cryptographic certification. If approved, .icp could help bring blockchain-hosted applications into the traditional DNS system while making ICP infrastructure more recognizable. More adoption could mean more compute usage and cycles burned, but that isn’t guaranteed. One important distinction: owning a .icp domain wouldn’t automatically mean owning the underlying application. This isn’t just about domain names. It’s about infrastructure, verification, and digital ownership.
